Dvorak, New World Symphony

I heard this morning that Dvorak was inspired by the native Indians' music, whilst visiting the USA. Now I know why the New World symphony occasionally reminds me of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Hiyawatha's Wedding feast (my second ever experience of singing in a choir, if memory serves ...).

In places there is a mystical sense of surveying a pristine New World in all its natural perfection. It is easy to imagine Dvorak visiting America (1892–1895; director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York) with its endless space, unspoiled landscapes and a feeling of opportunities and freedom.

It is also wonderful to imagine this music giving a glimmer of this experience to millions in their day to day lives.

But - what of the TRUE experience of the New World brought about anytime, anyplace by a change of heart?
